How I built this: based on Garmin's published accuracy specs, professional reviewer testing, and owner reports I found digging through forums and comment sections — I haven't personally tested this unit indoors yet.

I keep seeing the same question in different words: is the R10 actually accurate indoors, or just outdoors where the ball has room to fly? I went looking for a real answer instead of repeating the marketing copy, and the honest picture is more specific than a simple yes or no.

What Garmin actually publishes

Garmin's own accuracy tolerances for the R10 are public: club head speed within ±3 mph, ball speed within ±1 mph, and both launch angle and launch direction within ±1 degree. Those are tight numbers on paper, and radar-based ball flight tracking is exactly the kind of measurement radar is good at — speed and direction over distance, which is why outdoor performance is rarely the concern.

The part indoors changes: spin

Here's the detail I found that actually matters: one professional reviewer at PlayBetter tested the R10 and found the spin numbers weren't trustworthy unless you use Garmin's recommended Titleist RCT golf balls — special balls with embedded chips that the radar can read more precisely. Garmin doesn't include any RCT balls with the R10, and they're not something you'd want to use outdoors where you might lose them in the rough. Indoors, in a net, that's less of a problem — but it does mean the spin number on your screen is an estimate unless you've specifically bought balls most owners don't think to buy.

This lines up with what I've read elsewhere: ball speed, carry distance, and launch angle indoors are generally described as reliable and consistent with outdoor performance. Spin rate and the resulting shot shape/curve are the numbers people are more cautious about trusting indoors without the RCT balls.

Why this happens — the physics, briefly

Radar measures the ball by tracking its flight path over distance and time. Outdoors, the ball travels far enough for the radar to build a confident picture. Indoors, into a net just a few feet away, there's much less flight to read — which is exactly why spin (a more subtle rotational measurement) is harder to pin down than raw speed and direction. This isn't a defect specific to the R10; it's closest to a category-wide limitation of radar-based devices used in tight indoor spaces, which I've touched on before when covering room-depth requirements.

How this compares to the MLM2Pro

I've written before about the Rapsodo MLM2Pro's own version of this same problem: it also needs special marked balls (Rapsodo's RPT balls) for camera-measured spin, and Rapsodo at least ships three in the box. Garmin doesn't include any RCT balls with the R10 at all — a small but real difference in how each company sets up a new owner for accurate data on day one.

My take

I wouldn't call this a reason to skip the R10 — ball speed and distance, which is what most practice sessions actually run on, hold up indoors. But if shot shape or spin numbers are why you're buying a launch monitor, know going in that you'll want the RCT balls, and that even with them, spin indoors is an estimate rather than a lab measurement. That's a more useful way to think about “accuracy” than a single yes-or-no answer.
